The Golden Age of FMV Games (part 1)

The 1980's is widely considered the golden age of arcade games in the US. The newest games, the best graphics – it could only be found in the arcade. Classics like Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Tempest and Galaga were born in that era. It was also the era that gave us the usage of real video in videogames. Dragon's Lair is the prime example of this development in technology. They are/were often criticized for their lack of interactivity. Why use a linear technology for something that is more or less defined by interactivity?

Live : Podcast recording

If justin.tv is up again in the coming hour, i'll broadcast the podcast recording live here on geeksnotnerds.com

UPDATE: well, that kinda failed. Audio routing issues prevented us from doing it. Better luck next week!

Ryan Patton, a producer working on Metal Gear Solid 4, has announced on his Kojima Productions Report that the game will be playable at the upcoming E for All convention in Los Angeles which is set for October 18 to October 21 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. It will feature an updated version of the demo that was shown at Tokyo Game Show, and will have all the English voice acting in it. There will be 12 boots available for everyone to play.

"Wow, is this for real?" That was the first thought I had when the iLiad was in my hands. This digital paper device displays text in the same clarity you get when you read from good old books. The display doesn't look like any computer display you are familiar with. It has a somewhat fake look to it, but then you start interacting with it...that was a real 'wow' moment for me.

Podcast : delayed for 24 hours

I know, I know: we are already a day late. We have recorded the first part of the podcast, but have to delay the further recording of the podcast for 24 hours due to some scheduling problems.

I have never read any Harry Potter book, and I don't care either.
This following may or may not shock you, so read at your own discretion.

You Americans have had the chance to get Resident Evil 4 edition for a few weeks now. As usual, Europeans arrive late to the party. I've never played the GC edition, so i was looking forward to this release. It has been released for $30 in America, which seemed like a fair price.

I was willing to pay €30 for it, but it's priced at a fucking €45. Lets do some simple math here :

Gaming has hit the frontpages! And (again) because of the violent content of a game. It's the '90s all over again. The BBFC rejected the rating of the game Manhunt 2 because of its content, and the ESRB rated it as 'Adult Only' which effectively means the game cannot be released officially for any Sony or Nintendo console.

Is GameTap Web 2.0?

Lately, GameTap.com has been getting more and more coverage. The people at the 1up network mention them quite a lot in for example their podcasts, seemingly praising them. Don't get me wrong, i love the 1up website and the things they do (our own site idol Jenn Frank resides there!). But i can't get rid of the impression that they just mention the service because of at least some marketing agreement.

Yesterday zeekay, kieran and me had the first try-out for the podcast show we want to do. Our initial goal was to call up kieran and find out how our Irish friend was doing. It took a little convincing on our part to get his approval, but we got it. Zeekay had all these plans about doing a very structured show but once things got rolling he just forgot about it and just couldn't shut up. We had a good 30 minutes talk usable for some sort of show (make that 20 after editing out some stuff) with kieran providing us some excellent soundbites. Irish is pry the best variant on the English language ever. Zeekay has a really good voice for fake radio. We also had some trouble pronouncing each others nick. It was pretty funny hearing all these different interpretations. Kieran tried to convince us that his name is pronounced as Carman, which is of course a big fucking lie. Must be some Irish trait.
